Are you also tired of dandruff? You have tried all anti-dandruff shampoos available in the market, and are still not able to get rid of it? Do not worry, as we are here to help you out. Excess dandruff can also cause hair loss. Instead of spending an amount on getting expensive shampoos, why not go for simple home-made remedies? You will have many items in your kitchen that are used daily. The cause of dandruff can be many, such as oily, scaly, dry skin, or environmental pollution. Hence, it is important to keep your scalp clean.

As we are busy with our daily lives, taking out some self-care time can be challenging. So, we have come up with 5 tips that do not consume much time, and you can try out during the weekend.

The Baking Soda Scalp Scrub

Instead of using a plastic massager or a medicated scrub, use baking soda as a natural exfoliant. When you are in the shower, rub a tablespoon of baking soda directly into your wet scalp. It acts as a gentle abrasive that "de-gunks" the skin by removing dead cells and excess oil without the need for harsh chemicals. It also has mild antifungal properties. Note that your hair might feel a bit dry initially, but as your scalp’s natural oil production stabilises, this will subside.

2. The Tea Tree Oil Treatment

In place of medicated shampoos, use Tea Tree Oil, a potent natural antiseptic and antifungal. It specifically targets the Malassezia fungus that causes most dandruff. You can mix 5-10 drops of pure tea tree oil into your regular sulfate-free shampoo or carrier oil (like jojoba). Massage it thoroughly into the scalp and let it sit for 5 minutes before rinsing.

3. The Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse

For a powerful natural intervention, use an Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse. ACV is highly acidic, which changes the pH of your scalp to an environment where fungus struggles to survive. Mix one part raw, unfiltered ACV with three parts water in a spray bottle. After shampooing, spritz this mixture directly onto your scalp, massage it in, and let it sit for two minutes before rinsing with cool water. It acts as a natural disinfectant and helps "close" the hair cuticle for extra shine.

4. Hydrate Without Clogging

A common mistake is thinking dandruff is just "dryness" and slathering the scalp in heavy oils like coconut or olive oil. In reality, the fungus that causes dandruff actually feeds on these oils, which can make the flaking worse. Instead, use a lightweight, Aloe Vera-based hydrator or a conditioner specifically labeled "scalp-safe". If you have dry ends, apply your heavy conditioner only from the mid-lengths down to avoid re-congesting the skin you just cleaned.

5. Manage the Internal Environment

Your scalp health is often a reflection of your internal inflammation levels. High-sugar diets and high-stress levels can trigger oil production (sebum), which acts as "fuel" for dandruff. Focus on increasing your intake of Omega-3 fatty acids (found in walnuts, chia seeds, and salmon) and Zinc to support skin repair. By lowering your sugar intake and keeping your stress levels in check through consistent sleep or exercise, you reduce the biological triggers that cause dandruff flare-ups in the first place.
