The recently concluded nature and bird festival, organised at the Surajpur Wetland in Greater Noida, was not just an occasion to mark “World Wetlands Day” but also an attempt to focus on biodiversity, conservation, wildlife protection, and to promote eco-tourism. The Forest Department also organised nature trails and bird-watching activities to encourage visitors to refrain from harming bird habitats.
KP Malik, UP Minister of State for Forest, Environment, Zoological Garden and Climate Change, was present on the occasion. He noted his appreciation for the wetland, which is also an internationally recognised Ramsar site, and the rich natural heritage of the region. Migratory birds from afar come to take advantage of the favourable weather conditions.
Malik said a collective effort on the part of everyone is required to conserve nature and birds, and that was the purpose of celebrating World Wetlands Day every year on February 2. He expressed concern over the consequential damage to nature in the race for development, where many bird species are on the brink of extinction. He also added that occasions like these create awareness among the general public about conservation needs.
District Magistrate Medha Roopam, who was also present on the occasion, said that the wetland was a living example of an invaluable natural heritage not only of the district but of the entire state. She further added that it is a collective responsibility of the common citizens to preserve biodiversity.
